Johnny Magnuson, known around central Florida as Johnny “Mag Sax” was born in Rochester, New York in 1972.  After relocating to Illinois, Johnny went to high school in Jacksonville, Illinois where his love for jazz and blues began while playing the saxophone in the Jacksonville High School band.  Johnny went on to attend Western Illinois University, with a major in Music Performance and was a member of the R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officers Training Course), which offered him the opportunity to join an elite group of musicians in the United States Army Band.

Johnny joined the army and the famous US Army Band, touring Europe for two years, mainly in Germany during the Gulf War. The prestigious US Army Band played for a variety of military and presidential dignitaries, but whenever possible Johnny also played in many concert venues with popular local bands in Germany and France.

Johnny’s army unit transferred back to the U.S. and Johnny was assigned to Ft. Hood, Texas. There, Johnny frequently played night clubs on 6th Street in Austin, TX, a well known nighttime hot spot for a wide variety of bands and musicians in the Blues and Jazz genres.  This was a wonderful time to experiment and grow to be a powerful and popular jazz musician. While there, Johnny continued to move away from the strict methodology of playing in the army band, adding a blues angle to his already growing, versatile playing style.  Johnny’s smooth, cordial jazz sound became state-of-the-art. Equipped with impeccable timing, flawless technicality, and mood-evoking melodies, Johnny consistently delivered rich, warm, high quality accompaniment.

Within past years, Johnny developed a Smooth Jazz collaboration CD with a gifted guitarist named Marc Vee.  The collaboration was called “VMP - Vee/Magsax Project”.  VMP was the opening act for Chris Botti and Boney James at the annual “Jazz on the Green“ Smooth Jazz Concert for the Children’s Hospital Benefit at the Florida Gulf Coast University campus in Ft. Myers, FL. In 2004, “VMP” also opened a concert for the famous jazz saxophonist Kenny G.

With a home-base for many years in Orlando, Florida, Johnny “Mag Sax” has performed on albums with many famous recording artists such as Paul Jackson Jr., Bob Baldwin, Ruth Ann Galatas, Tata Vega, Paul Russo, Ayieb Dieng, Tom Dowd, and Mike Blaty.  Johnny has also opened for Najee and performed the National Anthem for the “Orlando Magic” and “San Antonio Spurs” basketball game at TD Waterhouse in Orlando, FL.

Johnny “Mag Sax” continues to play his smooth jazz in a wide variety of clubs, special events, golf outings, charities, parties, weddings and more, in and around Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Johnny Mag Sax specializes in wedding sax music for your ceremony music, cocktail hour, dinner hour and/or reception. Orlando Weddings is a specialty for Johnny Mag Sax in Orlando,FL.
